Glenmorrie Law is a boutique law firm run by attorney Ed Piper.
Ed practices in three primary areas. The first lies at the intersection of cybersecurity, privacy, and technology law, on which Ed has represented clients ranging from individual entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies. As a litigator, Ed has prosecuted and defended data security cases involving claims arising under the Stored Communications Act, the Wiretap Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the Defend Trade Secrets Act, the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, and numerous other statutory and common law data security regimes. As an advisor, Ed has counseled clients on how best to comply with myriad domestic and international consumer privacy regulations, including the Oregon Consumer Privacy Act (OCPA), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), and the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Ed’s second area of practice covers all aspects of employment law. He primarily (but not exclusively) represents employers. Ed has both advised on and litigated matters involving the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and a broad range of other federal and state employment laws. Additionally, Ed routinely represents both employers and employees in disputes over the enforceability of noncompetition agreements and other types of restrictive covenants.
Finally, Ed practices general commercial law. His experience in that area includes matters involving breaches of commercial contracts, corporate governance disputes, antitrust and competition law, and myriad other sorts of business disputes. In particular, Ed regularly advises clients on the special conflict of laws problems facing technology companies whose products implicate the laws of multiple jurisdictions.
Ed began his career with Paul Hastings LLP in Palo Alto, California. He later practiced at Stoel Rives LLP and Angeli & Calfo LLC, each in Portland, Oregon. Ed also served as general counsel to a large, privately-held technology company that provides business and communications services to customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and elsewhere around the world.
Ed earned his B.A. from Stanford University, where he graduated with distinction and was elected Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), where he was a finalist in the James Patterson McBaine Honors Moot Court Competition. Ed is licensed to practice law in Oregon, Washington, and California.
